As John Adams, the 2nd president of the United States, declared, “The only foundation of a free republic is pure virtue.”  He extended his thoughts upon another occasion this way: “Religion and virtue are the only foundations, not only of republicanism and of all free governments, but of social felicity … and in all the combinations of human society.”
